Wickecheoke Creek

In February 2022, MDB had the privilege of partnering with Fay Sciarra, co-owner and operator of Umbrella Decor, and her husband David, to undertake a remarkable construction and renovation project. Our mission? To breathe new life into a charming farmhouse situated on the picturesque fringes of the Wickecheoke Creek Preserve.

Collaborating closely with the property's owner, we embarked on a journey that artfully blended a deep respect for the past with our clients' profound appreciation for modern architecture. We envisioned this project as a Restomod for a home, bridging the gap between history and contemporary living.

A pivotal component of our design was the creation of "the connector," a concept inspired by a childhood memory of George Akers, co-owner of MDB, who recalled the remarkable staircases designed by Jean Labatut, the renowned architect behind the Stuart Country Day School. Notably, the staircase treads in this connector are deeper than is commonly seen, coupled with a shorter rise, providing a gentle and graceful transition between spaces.

The addition was meticulously constructed with double-stud walls, boasting thick insulation for superior energy efficiency. Large triple-pane windows and exterior doors were thoughtfully integrated to flood the interior with natural light while maintaining excellent thermal performance.

Fay and David's vision drew inspiration from contemporary European and South American architecture, which influenced both the interior and exterior selections. Our objective was to create a sleek and modern interior, complemented by Fay's passion for fine vintage furniture and architectural salvage, all while adhering to superlative construction practices to ensure maximum efficiency.

The result is a project that harmoniously combines elements of the past with the aspirations of the present, resulting in a farmhouse that pays homage to its heritage while embracing the comforts of modern living. We are thrilled to share the journey of this transformation with you and invite you to explore the portfolio of our work.
